Recently I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon at Langston Centre in Johnson City celebrating International Women’s Month. The theme was “Moving Forward Together.” It featured two uplifting speakers. The first I wrote about last week, Dr. Dorothy Dobbins.
The second speaker, whom I will focus on this week was Tanya Smith Foreman, Global Public Affairs Manager for Eastman.
Tanya began her talk, “Moving Forward Together with Power and Purpose” by inviting us to speak positive words to our neighbor. What an uplifting idea! My seat neighbor, Kim Tomlin, happens to make marvelous looking charcuterie boards (Kim owns Taste and See Charcuterie) so I complimented her. Kim, in turn, complimented me on my positive energy (Thanks Kim! I try!)
Tanya reflected on women who have been influential and made positive differences in the world. She listed Queen Esther and Mother Teresa as her top two, calling Mother Teresa “influential, powerful and humble” in her mission to care for the “unwanted, unloved and uncared for.”
She said we need to do three things:
1. Love yourself- we are indeed the apple of God’s eye
2. Start where you are - God created you as a work of art, flaws and all
3. Be resilient- We can bounce back and emerge stronger as we learn and adapt.
She said that we have the power to empower others. “Speak positivity and you will do this. Encourage future generations.”
